50th Anniversary of The Sound of Music

A long time favorite, The Sound of Music, is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary! We have two copies of the 50th Anniversary Special Edition of the Original Cast Recording: The Sound Of Music to give to two lucky readers! Read on to find out how to enter.

S.O.Music_cvr7

On November 16, 1959, The Sound of Music – the last musical collaboration of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II – made history when it opened at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Masterworks Broadway celebrates that milestone with a special 50th anniversary edition of the musical’s beloved original cast recording, starring Broadway legend Mary Martin. The 50th anniversary edition of the original cast recording of The Sound of Music will be released on November 3, 2009.

While a larger audience came to know The Sound of Music six years later, when the Oscar-winning film version starring Julie Andrews was released, the musical became a major hit of the 1959-60 season, sharing (with Fiorello!) that spring the Tony Award for Best Musical. It ran 1,443 performances on Broadway, toured the U.S. for several seasons and became an even longer-running hit in London when the first British production (1961) ran twice as long as its Broadway counterpart. It continues to be one of the most popular and enduring musicals of all time.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of The Sound of Music, Masterworks Broadway has restored the original cast recording in a new edition that features three unusual bonus tracks, extensive liner notes about the show’s history by Bert Fink of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, and rarely seen photos of the recording sessions, held November 22, 1959, in Columbia Records’ celebrated 30th Street Studios.

In addition to the original cast recording, the three bonus tracks on the 50th anniversary edition are:
“From Switzerland: The Pratt Family,” a spoof of The Sound of Music created for and performed by Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett in 1962 on their TV special Julie and Carol Live at Carnegie Hall; A live recording of “Edelweiss,” sung in German, from the historic first production (2005) of The Sound of Music in Vienna; A soaring cover version of “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” sung in Swedish (as “Sök dig till bergen”) by Tommy Körberg, best known to American audiences for his vocals on the concept album of Chess.

The release of the recording comes just as Simon & Schuster adds to The Sound of Music phenomenon with a collectible pop-up book for every family’s library. The heartwarming, classic adventure – adapted by Bert Fink from the story of the stage musical – comes alive with paper engineering as unforgettable as each timeless melody. It is available now wherever books are sold.

We have been singing along with the songs ever since we got our copy. It’s so much fun to sing our favorites. It’s even more fun to look at the pop-up book that they came out with for the anniversary too. You can find The Sound of Music: A Classic Collectible Pop-Up on Amazon. Believe me, you are going to want this book, especially if you love The Sound of Music story. We love pop up books too, and this one did not disappoint!

This Cast Recording and Pop up Book are a great way for you to spend quality time with your child while encouraging their reading skills along the way.  According to the Child Literacy Center reading to your child is the single most valuable thing you can do. Many educational intuitions suggest reading predictable books that children can “read” back to you and sharing music with strong rhythms and songs with rhyming lines. What better way to teach your child to read, than with a story and music that you grew up with and love.  You can use this Sing-Along guide along with the book to encourage your child to follow the story with you.

Want a chance to win one of the CDs?

Just leave a comment on this post before midnight on Friday December 4th. Tell us your favorite song from The Sound of Music! The winners will be chosen at random and contacted by email shortly after the giveaway ends.

Once in a Blue Moon

Once in a Blue Moon

Once in a Blue Moon

I recently got the chance to read a new book by Eileen Goudge called Once in a Blue Moon. This was my first time hearing about the author, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect from the book. Well, I have to say, that once I got started reading it was hard to stop. I really wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters next!

It is a story about two sisters who find each other after being apart for years and years. They each have very different lives, and at the heart of the story is how they learn to be sisters again. Of course, there are many other things that happen as well, and other fun and colorful characters that make the book a really interesting read.

Sisters Lindsay and Kerrie Ann have known hardship from an early age. Without guidance from their neglectful mother, their only aid came from an unlikely source, a retired exotic dancer by the name of Miss Honi Love. When the girls’ mother was sent to prison, Miss Honi tried unsuccessfully to save them from being separated and sent into foster care.

Thirty years later, Lindsay is still trying to reconnect with her sister. The owner of a bookstore in the sleepy California seaside town of Blue Moon Bay, she was lucky enough to have been adopted by a loving couple. Unbeknownst to her, Kerrie Ann has suffered a very different life. Bounced from one foster home to the next, she ran away as a teenager before becoming a drug-addicted single mother. Now, newly sober, Kerrie Ann is fighting to regain custody of the little girl who was taken from her.

Neither sister’s expectations are met when they’re finally reunited. But as the two sisters engage in the fiercest battles of their lives, they are at last drawn together despite their differences, restoring belief in the unshakable bond of family.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book a lot! There was a lot of language (F-bombs and such), so if that bothers you a lot you might not enjoy the book as much. However, it was fitting to the character and I didn’t feel like it detracted at all from the story (sure there could have been less and it would have been fine too). Other than that I have no complaints!

To learn more about the author, visit her website at EileenGoudge.com. She has other books as well, which I look forward to reading now that I have read this book. Thanks to the One2One network for providing the review copy of the book, and introducing me to a great author!

Book: Table Manners

I recently got a chance to read Table Manners. I hadn’t heard of the author before (Mia King), so I was pretty excited to try a new author. It turns out this isn’t her first book, and is in fact a squeal to her book, Good Things. Here is a little bit about the book:

Her simple life is more complicated than ever.
Deidre McIntosh finally has all the ingredients for a perfect life. She has her own line of cakes and cookies, and the perfect boyfriend, Kevin Johnson, one of Seattle’s top bachelors. Creative, energetic, and loving, Deidre is the person friends go to when they need a helping hand.

But when Kevin’s ex-fiancée, the sultry and successful magazine publisher Sabine Durant, suddenly appears in Seattle, it’s Deidre who needs help. Already intimidated by Kevin’s glamorous, moneyed world–and his sister, who wants Deidre out of Kevin’s life–she knows she’s no match for Sabine.

Deidre turns to her friends for advice, but finds they’re having crises of their own. When her business begins to slip from her fingers, Deidre knows she must to do something to keep her career and her love life from imploding. Can everyone’s favorite go-to person save herself?

The book was a nice, light read. What I enjoyed was that there wasn’t anything in the book that would make you blush (I could easily pass it along to anyone I know). The author’s style was very approachable, and though the story had some predictable parts, it was a fun story. Perfect for a weekend read!

Oh, and I have to mention the recipes! They included recipes in the book (at the back), which was a nice surprise because all the talk about cookies and French treats sure made me hungry while I was reading. You can also find recipes, and find out more about Mia and all of her books, on her website.
